This January I attended the Triangle Business Journal’s 2016 Businessperson of the Year Award Luncheon. For the first time since I can remember they nominated the CEO of a non-profit corporation, Chuck Purvis of Coastal Federal Credit Union (CFCU).  I had to be there!

Now many would say that CFCU has more in common with a for-profit bank than a non-profit organization. Chuck, however, made it clear that day his heart and his actions are grounded in the nonprofit mission of his organization.

Chuck publicly worries about growing income inequality across the country and specifically in North Carolina. Chuck believes it is the biggest threat to our democracy. [Read more…]

How Great Businesses Get Stuck

Still she had a sense her business was stuck, overtaken by a kind of semi-controlled chaos.

Sometimes Martha would take a big risk to move forward and grow, but then a crisis would strike and the business contracted again, leaving her business and balance sheet tattered.

In the back of her mind, the continuous mantra was ‘Where is the next client?’ This feeling of never having enough, always needing more drove her and her business to big highs and big lows.

What is Your Vision for 2014?

Such a seed resides in you.  Do you know your seed?

A vision, that is, a picture of the future reflecting what you are meant to bring into the world, develops from the seed.  Inc. Magazine just published a wonderful post called Vision is Greater than Sight.  Indeed.

Work is often our way of expressing this seed and vision, of creating and contributing something unique and important.
